Cotoneaster is a Bonsai favorite and can be deciduous or evergreen.

This shrub, very common in our gardens, is characterized by small leaves, flowers and fruits, which makes it an ideal plant for bonsai cultivation.

With its red foliage in the fall, pink or white flowers in the spring and red berries in the winter, the Quince is attractive in all seasons and is a suitable species for bonsai cultivation, especially in the styles: prostrate, cascade, rockery and double-trunked.

Cotoneaster the bonsai favorite.

Cotoneaster is a Bonsai favorite and can be deciduous or evergreen.

Exposure.

It has good resistance to cold and also tolerates high temperatures well. Always place in full sun, except in July and August when a half-shade location is advisable.

Watering.

It loves fresh soils, but it is necessary to let the soil dry well between waterings. In summer vaporize the foliage.

Soil.

The ideal compost consists of: 50% akadama, 40% prepared soil and 10% pozzolan.

Re-potting.

Every two or three years, in autumn or spring.Ideal compost: 50% akadama,40% ready soil,10%pozzolana

Pruning.

Shorten branches to the second leaf when they have five. Training pruning should be done in March, at the time of repotting. It is advisable not to intervene after September.

Picking.

Constantly snip new shoots with scissors during the growing season to encourage thickening of the branching.

Winding.

You can apply wire from March, before the twigs lignify and stiffen, by wrapping the wire with adhesive paper first.

Fertilization.

At the end of flowering, after pruning, feed Bonsan Stimulating Fertilizer combined with Bonsan Liquid Organic Fertilizer 3 times at 8-10 day intervals. This fertilization can be substituted with Bonsan Stimulating Fertilizer plus Bonsan Organic Solid Fertilizer Hanagokoro 2 times every 15-20 days. At other times, use Bonsan Liquid Organic Fertilizer every 15 days until October, or Bonsan Hanagokoro Solid Organic Fertilizer every 15-25 days, excluding July and August. Twice a year (in autumn and at the end of winter) administer Bonsan Organic Solid Fertilizer Hanagokoro; 3-4 times a year it is also appropriate to intervene with Bonsan Mineral Curative Solution. To stimulate rooting, use Bonsan Fluid Organic Mineral Fertilizer with B vitamins instead of Bonsan Organic Liquid Fertilizer.

Care.

May be especially susceptible to aphids and mealybugs.

  1. The cotoneaster is a shrub with magnificent qualities to be worked as bonsai. It is a plant variety that has more than 100 species.

It is used by gardeners to make insulated shrubs and hedges. It has an excellent response to pruning.

In addition, it is characterized by its rusticity, which gives it a rugged appearance in bonsai format.

    1. Indeed, for Bonsai care, the peculiarities of this species must be taken into account.

In all cases, the recommended bonsai tools are those useful for pruning, clamping and transplanting (scissors, tweezers and the respective pot).

Otherwise, it is a bonsai of relatively simple care.
