The Japanese quince tree , or chojubai as it's known in Japan, has a small, intense red flower that stands out against the dark gray of its wood. It blooms in winter and, to a lesser extent, in summer, so it's common to see it leafless with its branches covered in flowers, giving it an even more extraordinary appearance. It's a slow-growing, highly prized species, and although I'm not a big fan of spiky trees, I've made an exception for this species.
