Ready-made composts are available for growing bonsai , but true bonsai enthusiasts generally prefer to mix and prepare the ideal potting mix for their plants themselves.
But how do you prepare the ideal soil for bonsai needs?
Here are three valid DIY solutions:
- an ideal mix for growing bonsai is 50% universal potting soil, 20% fine gravel, 20% pumice, and 10% humus;
- alternatively, you can use one part small lapilli (i.e., small solid fragments of lava), one part peat, and one part commercially available universal potting soil.
- a third solution is a mixture of 40% sand, 40% peat, and 10% clay , with the addition of a handful of crushed pumice.
By increasing the amount of soil, which retains more water, you can ensure the plants have higher humidity , making it ideal when regular watering is difficult. If, on the other hand, the area where the plant is located is particularly humid, it's advisable to increase the drainage component (gravel) to allow water to drain better, thus preventing root rot.
